There is a lot of information on the Internet about soft skills and in particular about communication. I will not bore you by speaking about the things you can easily find on google, instead, I would like to share my opinion and experience about this extraordinary important skill.

First, I would like to highlight the word “skill”. Skills can be gained throughout our life. They are what makes us confident and independent and are essential for our success. Obtaining skills might take determination and practice, but almost any skill can be taught or improved.

Successfully managing a project from start to finish requires?certain key skills. Planning, time management, and the ability to negotiate with internal and external parties are all critical for success. Leadership, risk management, critical and creative thinking similarly all fall high on the list.

But the skill that I think is the most important for project management, the one that underlies all these others is Communication.?

Without strong communication skills, project managers would find it incredibly difficult, if not impossible, to effectively manage their teams and coordinate efforts in order to bring about the successful resolution of a project.?In project management, like in all other business processes, there are multiple different types of communication and communication styles that might impact a project.

The primary role of?communication in project management?is to make certain that everyone involved shares the vision and the goals of the project. Thus, it’s important for project managers to select the communication method that fits the needs of the organization.

From my experience methods that work in a small company won’t likely work in a large business.

As Agile Manifesto says “the most efficient and effective method of conveying information to and within a development team is face-to-face conversation”. I definitely agree. It involves interacting directly with team members, understanding both personal and team blockers, and it is the most effective way to make sure that the project is on track.

Again according to Agile Manifesto we should build projects around motivated individuals and at regular intervals, the team reflects on how to become more effective, then tunes and adjusts its behavior accordingly.

One on One meetings and Retrospectives are some of the most powerful meetings that I use to give feedback, keep each other in the loop, resolve issues, and help the participants grow in their roles and advance in their careers. These meetings allow creating a basis for a trusting and productive work relationship.

Similarly, it’s up to you to determine the best channel and form of communication for your team to take them to success.

Don’t be afraid to tailor your methods of communication to individual stakeholders or members of your team, if you think doing so will help the project stay on track.

Ah, communication. You would think that as much as we talk and interact with one another we would all be really good at this. I have failed often and uniquely many times with this. I agree with matching the method to the players. Where I have failed the most is where I did not spend enough time in setting up the "rules" for communication. If you have even been to a live auction, when you sit back and watch someone in the front of the room yell things quickly and some people in a group raise their hand or some have a paddle, and somehow the auctioneer acknowledges and records the bid verbally while also keeping track of the process. It works because everyone knows the rules, and if you don't you can get educated quickly by watching or asking. I recommend that teams set out ground rules for communication and then during a retrospective grade their teams performance on how they communicated. I have found the projects that went very well the communication score was high, and the reverse was also true. The system has to learn how to communicate, the system of people which is your team, and every new team member must be taught this.
